In this OE Insight, we explore the history of ambulatory surgical care, its current challenges, and its potential to not only lower costs and improve patient care, but tackle a huge surgical backlog and build a better foundation for surgical care. We also discuss the importance of the strategic and purposeful integration of these centres into existing publicly-funded health systems so that ambulatory care can be a successful long-term solution for the problems it aims to solve and so its benefits can be secured for generations to come.
