A single-group, pre-post psilocybin case series was conducted in 10 volunteers with DSM-IV diagnosed alcohol dependence. Patients received one or two doses of oral psilocybin in separate sessions alongside motivational enhancement therapy. Patients were assessed on the effects of psilocybin, as well as drinking abstinence, the Short Inventory of Problems (SIP), Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), Alcohol Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale (AASE), and Profile of Mood States (POMS). In the first 4 weeks of treatment there was no significant increase in abstinence. Increases in abstinence were seen at weeks 5-8 through to week 36. The intensity of the effects of psilocybin were predictive of changes in drinking at weeks 5-8, with more intense experiences correlating to increased abstinence.
