The Use of Combination Paracetamol and Ibuprofen in Postoperative Pain after Total Knee Arthroplasty, a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Thirty-six patients with knee osteoarthritis scheduled for a total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive a combination of intravenous paracetamol and ibuprofen (n=12), paracetamol only (n=12) or ibuprofen only (n=12) for the management of post-operative pain. Outcomes of interest included pain intensity during rest, while walking, and at full knee flexion on a numeric pain rating scale (NRS), early ambulation using the 2 minute walk test, and opioid consumption in the first 24 hours. Results revealed significantly better early ambulation in the combination group compared to both ibuprofen only and paracetamol only. NRS pain scores during walking were significantly better in the combination and ibuprofen groups vs. the paracetamol group.
