Do Adhesive Drapes Have an Effect on Infection Rates in Orthopaedic Surgery? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Clin Orthop Relat Res . 2021 Sep 7.A meta-analysis of randomized controlled comparing adhesive drapes (n=1129) to controls (n=1137) was performed. The outcomes of interest were wound contamination, impact of intraoperative drape peeling and surgical site infection rates. Pooled data from wound swab cultures demonstrated that adhesive drapes significantly reduced the rate of wound contamination compared to controlled. The evidence was inconclusive to determine the impact of drape peeling on wound contamination. The two trials reporting on surgical site infections reported no infections in either group and no conclusions could be made about the impact of adhesive drapes on infection rates.
