Impact of the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block on postoperative analgesia and functional recovery following total hip arthroplasty: a randomised, observer-masked, controlled trial.

Sixty patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty via the posterior approach were randomized to receive a pericapsular nerve group block (PENG, n=30) or no block (n=30). The primary outcome of interest was postoperative pain as measured by a numeric rating scale. Secondary outcomes included postoperative opioid consumption, patient function and length of stay. The PENG block group demonstrated lower pain scores within the first 48 hours postoperatively compared to the control group. The PENG group also demonstrated reduced time to first opioid consumption and reduced overall opioid consumption. Finally, the PENG group demonstrated improved hip range of motion and shorter time to ambulation than the control group.
