Effect of Tourniquet Use on Patient Outcomes After Cementless Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
J Arthroplasty . 2021 Jul;36(7):2331-2334.One hundred patients undergoing cementless total knee arthroplasty were randomized to a short tourniquet time (<10 minutes, n=50) or a long tourniquet time (duration of case, n=50). Outcomes of interest were postoperative pain scores measured with the visual analogue scale (VAS), opioid consumption, length of stay, blood loss and functional outcome scores. The short tourniquet group had significantly less opioid consumption in the first 24h postoperatively but differences did not persist past this time point. The long tourniquet group had significantly less intraoperative blood loss but no difference in change in hemoglobin or transfusion rates. No differences in functional or patient reported outcomes were noted.
