Hemodynamic effects of norepinephrine versus phenylephrine infusion for prophylaxis against spinal anesthesia-induced hypotension in the elderly population undergoing hip fracture surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

Sixty eight patients scheduled for a hip fracture surgery under spinal anesthetic were randomized to receive a norepinephrine (NE) infusion (n=34) or phenylephrine (PE) infusion (n=34). The outcomes of interest included mean heart rate, blood pressure, cardiac output, and incidence of hypotension and hypertension. There was no episodes of hypotension in either group. The NE group demonstrated a significantly higher heart rate, lower incidence of reactive bradycardia and lower rates of hypertension compared to the PE group.
