Supervised Vs. Home Exercise Program For Knee Osteoarthritis .
Supervised exercises have superior effects compared to home-based exercises for patients with knee osteoarthritis following platelet-rich plasma injection.
Res Sports Med . 2024 Mar-Apr;32(2):279-289.40 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either physiotherapist-supervised exercises (n=20) or home-based exercises (n=20) following a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. Outcomes of interest included pain reduction on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), hip and knee muscle strength improvements, and knee function as measured by the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Outcomes were assessed at baseline and six weeks. Overall, the results of the study revealed that the supervised exercise group experienced significantly greater improvements in pain, knee function, and muscle strength (hip, quadriceps, and hamstrings) compared to the home-based group. This study suggests that supervised exercises are more effective in managing symptoms and improving function in knee osteoarthritis patients following PRP injection.
