Adding Education to Trunk & Hip Exercises for Patellofemoral Pain .
Is Adding Education to Trunk and Hip Exercises Beneficial for Patellofemoral Pain? A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Arch Phys Med Rehabil . 2024 Feb;105(2):217-226.Sixty patients with patellofemoral pain were randomized to receive either education followed by trunk and hip exercises (n=30) or trunk and hip exercises alone (n=30). The primary outcome of interest was pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes of interest included the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), function on the Knee Outcome Survey - Activity of Daily Living (KOS-ADL), and muscle strength. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, after 8 weeks (post-intervention), and at 3 months post-intervention (follow-up). Overall, the results of the study revealed that adding education to trunk and hip exercises did not significantly improve pain but did show greater improvements in pain catastrophizing and kinesiophobia at post-intervention and follow-up compared to exercises alone. These findings suggest that incorporating education into exercise programs may enhance psychological outcomes for patients with patellofemoral pain.
