Overall, digitally delivered exercise programs are a viable alternative to traditional care methods, offering comparable benefits for pain, physical function, and quality of life in patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis. This study underscores the potential for remote healthcare solutions to improve OA management. However, the review also highlights limitations such as variability in diagnostic criteria and the quality of included studies, suggesting the need for further high-quality research.
Study Summary
Thirteen randomized controlled trials including 2609 patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis comparing digitally delivered exercise versus traditional care methods. Pooled outcomes of interest included pain, physical function, and quality of life. Digitally delivered exercise was found to be superior to education only and paper-based delivery for short-term pain and physical function improvements and had comparable effectiveness to face-to-face delivery in the medium and long term. The main findings suggest that digitally delivered exercise can be a viable alternative to traditional care methods, particularly in the context of remote healthcare delivery.
