This study found that teriparatide did not result in a significant advantage over placebo with respect to pelvic fracture healing or pain; a significant benefit in physical performance was observed at 2-3 months, yet this was not observed in the timed up and go test. This study was limited by the underpowered sample size, as the study had planned to recruit 100 people but had to halt recruitment due to supply issues. Moreover, over half the patients had displaced fractures, which may have had an impact on healing. A larger study is required to further assess the utility of teriparatide injections for pelvic fractures.

Thirty-five patients over the age of 50 with an acute pelvic fracture were randomized to receive 3 months of subcutaneous teriparatide injections (n=18) or placebo injections (n=17). Outcomes of interest included pain scores on a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), physical performance scores (Continuous Summary Physical Performance Score [CSPPS]; timed up and go), and bone healing. Results revealed no significant differences between the two groups in all outcomes, with the exception of CSPPS scores which were in favour of the teriparatide group at 2-3 months.
