Quality of Life After Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Versus Conventional Radiation Therapy in Patients With Bone Metastases.

Both conventional radiation therapy and stereotactic body radiation showed positive effects in the quality of life of patients who have been irradiated of bone metastases. There were also improvements in the functional interference and emotional functioning domains in both arms, with the conventional radiation therapy arm with slightly greater improvement. The results of this trial were limited by the power to detect clinically important differences within the quality-of-life domains as well as a low follow-up rate. Future studies should also consider assessing the effects on the long term between both groups.

One hundred and ten patients with bone metastases were randomized to either receive stereotactic body radiation (n=55) therapy or conventional radiation therapy (n=55). All of the patients participated in the PRESENT trial previous to the VERTICAL trial. Outcomes such as quality of life, emotional and physical functioning, pain scores, functional interference, and psychosocial aspects via the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 (EORTC-C30) and the Bone Metastases 22 (BM22) questionnaire were recorded. There were no significant differences between both of the groups at 12 weeks when considering quality of life, physical and emotional functioning, functional interference, and psychosocial aspects. Functional interference scores and emotional functioning improved from baseline to 12 weeks and baseline to 8 weeks, respectively, after treatment in both arms.
