Resurfacing hemiarthroplasty compared to stemmed hemiarthroplasty for glenohumeral osteoarthritis: a randomised clinical trial

Thirty five patients, with a total of 40 included shoulders, with glenohumeral osteoarthritis were randomized to receive stemmed or resurfacing hemiarthroplasty in order to evaluate and compare clinical results of both treatments. Patients were evaluated using Constant-Murley score and the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder index. While results indicated that patients in the stemmed hemiarthroplasty group obtained superior mean outcomes at 12 months, there was significant improvement in outcomes in both groups. The difference in improvements between groups was no significantly different and further clinical evaluations are required to determine if differences observed in this study were true effects or differences in baseline measures.
