Quadriceps and hamstring tendon autografts in ACL reconstruction yield comparably good results in a prospective, randomized controlled trial

Based on the current study, quadriceps and hamstring autograft tendons provide similar results in patients undergoing ACL reconstruction. However, the current study was limited by small sample sizes which resulted in significant differences in baseline characteristics between groups. Future, appropriately powered trials are necessary.

Fifty one patients undergoing ACL reconstruction were randomized to receive an autograft hamstring tendon graft (n=27) or quadriceps tendon autograft (n=24). The primary outcome of interest was postoperative side to side knee laxity measured with an arthrometer. Secondary outcomes of interest were functional outcomes measured with the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm Scores, strength testing and adverse events. There was no statistically significant differences noted in any of the recorded outcomes between groups at 2-year follow-up.
