Psilocybin produces substantial and sustained decreases in depression and anxiety in patients with life-threatening cancer: A randomized double-blind trial

A moderately high dose of psilocybin can decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety and increase quality of life in cancer patients. Additionally, patients in the high dose group reported positive changes in attitudes about life, with an increased wellbeing and decreased death anxiety. All these results were sustained at the six-month follow-up. These results are limited by the homogeneity and small size of the sample.

Fifty-one cancer patients with life-threatening depression and anxiety symptoms underwent a randomized, double-blind cross-over trial. Patients first received either a very low dose (1 or 3 mg/70 kg, n = 27) or high dose (22 or 30 mg/70 kg, n = 29) of psilocybin with five weeks in between sessions and a follow-up at six months. The primary therapeutic outcome measures were clinician-rated measures of depression and anxiety. The high dose group demonstrated decreased measures of depression and anxiety.
