Psilocybin and MDMA reduce costly punishment in the Ultimatum Game

While under the influence of psilocybin, participants were less likely to reject unfair offers, indicating that psilocybin has an effect on social decision making. Larger, randomized trials are needed in order to further evaluate these results. In the random generated version of the game, the median no drug rejection rate was 32.85% (IQR 0.69, 93.15), while after psilocybin the median rejection rate was 0% (IQR 0, 38.2).

This paper presented two studies, one of which is described in this report. The study on psilocybin included 23 male participants in a within-subject design, in which either a 2 mg intravenous dose was given, or no drug was given. The Ultimatum Game was played and the rejection rates of unfair offers were analyzed. It was found that psilocybin reduced the rejection of unfair offers, potentially meaning there is an alteration in the conceptualization of social rewards after a dose of psilocybin.
