Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Percutaneous Spinal Endoscopy versus Traditional Open Surgery for Lumbar Disc Herniation: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Twelve randomized controlled trials with a total of 2,797 patients were included in this meta-analysis comparing percutaneous endoscopic discectomy and traditional open discectomy for lumbar disc herniation. The pooled outcomes of interest included the likelihood of post-operative paresthesia, direct nerve root damage, disc recurrence, and intraoperative hemorrhage/hematoma. The results of this meta-analysis found that the likelihood of disc recurrence was significantly higher in the percutaneous endoscopic discectomy group vs. the open discectomy group. No differences in the pooled likelihood of paresthesia, direct nerve root damage, or intraoperative hemorrhage/hematoma were observed.
