Comparison of the efficacies of peloid therapy and paraffin treatment given as an adjuncts to exercise therapy in patients with hallux rigidus: a randomized, uncontrolled, prospective study

Ninety patients with symptomatic hallux rigidus (HR) were randomized to receive either exercise therapy with peloid (n=46) or exercise therapy with paraffin (n=44). Outcomes such as pain, functional status, and quality of life were assessed. Questionnaires such as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), and the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) were used to assess the outcomes. Joint range of motion (ROM) was also measured at 2 weeks and 1 month. All outcomes were similar between the two groups at all time points except for SF-36 physical function and pain at 2 weeks and left dorsiflexion at 1 month, with better scores in the peloid therapy and paraffin groups, respectively.
