New versus old: 95 degree angled blade plate versus distal femoral locking plate. A randomized clinical trial
Injury. 2021 Jun;52(6): 1563-1568.Seventy-eight patients (79 fractures) with distal femoral fractures were randomized to receive surgical fracture fixation using a locking condylar plate (n=42) or a 95° angled blade plate (n=36). The primary outcome of interest was the rate of nonunion. Secondary outcomes of interest included the rate of secondary surgery and the rate of malunion. The mean follow-up time was 25 months post-operation. Results of this study revealed no statistically significant differences between groups in the rate of non-union (p=0.06) and the rate of secondary surgery (p=0.05); however, these results trended in favour of the angled blade plate group. Also, 6 cases of malunion were observed in the angled blade plate group vs 11 in the locking condylar plate group.
