Autologous chondrocyte implantation using the original periosteum-cover technique versus matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte implantation: a randomized clinical trial

21 patients with symptomatic isolated full-thickness cartilage defects (4.1 +/- 0.09 cm2) at the femoral condyle were randomized to undergo either the matrix-associated autologous chrondocyte implantation (m-ACI) or periosteal flap autologous chrondocyte implantation (ACI-P). At 1 and 2 years follow up, the cartilage repair via matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte implant (m-ACI) was found equivalent in efficacy compared to earlier generation autologous chondrocyte implantation using periosteal flap technique.
