Study findings may suggest that the addition of ketorolac to lidocaine provides superior pain relief up to 48 hours following core needle biopsy compared to lidocaine alone in patients with painless musculoskeletal tumours. This study was limited by the use of a single study site, limited observation period, and assessment of conducting only 1 dose. Future studies are required to further assess the potential benefits of ketorolac addition to lidocaine for reducing post-operative pain in musculoskeletal tumour patients undergoing core needle biopsy.

One hundred and twenty-eight patients with musculoskeletal tumours and scheduled for a core needle biopsy were randomized to receive a pre-biopsy injection of 10 mL 2% lidocaine plus adrenaline (n=64) or 10 mL 2% lidocaine plus adrenaline plus 30 mg of ketorolac (n=64) for the relief of post-procedural pain. The outcome of interest was pain severity after injection evaluated on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) at 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 60-72 hours post-injection. Results revealed VAS pain scores to be statistically significantly lower in the ketorolac group compared to the control group at all time points up to 48 hours post-injection (p<0.05 for all).
