Three hundred postmenopausal Chinese Women were randomized to eat dried beancurd (n=150) or rice cakes (control; n=150) for 2 years every day. Outcomes of interest included the following: incidence of adverse events, bone mineral density (BMD) of the spine and right proximal femur, total energy intake, macronutrient intake (i.e. protein, carbohydrate, fat, calcium, isoflavones), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum bone Gla protein (BGP), serum isoflavones, and levels of urinary N-telopeptide cross-links of collagen normalized for creatinine (NTX/CRT). Results demonstrated that serum isoflavone and isoflavone intake were statistically significantly higher in the dried beancurd group vs control (p<0.05 for both) at 2-years follow-up. Furthermore, across all timepoints, dried beancurd was found to statistically significantly increase the mean % change in BMD in lumbar spine (p<0.001). However, between the dried beancurd and control groups, the rate of % change in BMD for the right proximal femur was not statistically significantly different between groups (p>0.05 for all). All macronutrients and energy levels were not statistically significantly different between the dried beancurd group and control group (p>0.05 for all) at 2 years follow-up.
