OE Journal. 2024;12(14):32 Homeopathy . 2023 Nov;112(4):240-250.What this means for my practice?
The key takeaway from this study is that individualized homeopathic medicines showed some potential for alleviating pain in lumbar spondylosis, particularly in certain pain subscales, but overall, they did not significantly outperform placebo in primary outcome measures. A major limitation of this study is the small sample size and the premature cessation of patient enrollment, which may affect the conclusiveness of the findings.
Study Summary
Forty-nine patients with lumbar spondylosis were randomized to receive either individualized homeopathic medicines (IHMs; n=26) or placebo (n=23). The primary outcome was the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for low back pain and disability. Secondary outcomes included the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) and the short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ). Outcomes were assessed monthly for three months. Overall, the results showed no statistically significant differences between the IHMs and placebo groups for the primary outcome. However, some secondary outcomes, such as SF-MPQ subscales, indicated minor benefits for the IHMs group at certain time points. The findings suggest that while IHMs did not significantly outperform placebo in the primary measures, they showed some effect in secondary measures, warranting further research.
