Conservative Treatment Vs Transverse Pinning For Fifth Metacarpal Neck Fractures .
Conservative treatment versus transverse pinning in fifth metacarpal neck fractures in active adults: a randomized controlled trial.
Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg . 2024 Apr;50(2):531-542.Ninety patients with fifth metacarpal neck fractures were randomized to receive either conservative treatment using an ulnar gutter slab (n=45) or transverse pinning (n=45). Outcomes of interest were the rate of fracture union, functional outcomes measured by the Quick DASH score, total active motion (TAM), total active flexion (TAF), and complication rates. Outcomes were assessed up to 12 months. Overall, the study found no significant differences in union rates or functional outcomes between the two treatment methods. The findings suggest that both conservative and surgical approaches are viable options for treating these fractures.
