Intra-articular hyaluronic acid compared with corticoid injections for the treatment of rhizarthrosis

56 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb (rhizarthrosis) were randomized to receive either an intervention treatment of intra-articular sodium hyaluronate (SH) or a triamcinolone acetonide (TA) corticoid injection. The primary outcomes were pain and function. Results indicated that the SH intervention resulted in positive and longer-lasting outcomes for pain relief and joint function. However, the SH intervention resulted in slower improvements than the TA treatment.
