One hundred pediatric patients (102 fractures) were included in this randomized trial comparing ibuprofen and acetaminophen for pain relief after sustaining a long bone fracture. The primary outcome of interest was the incidence of healing. Additional outcomes of interest included time to radiographic union, incidence of non-union, duration of medication use (i.e., treatment, narcotic consumption), pain on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the incidence of adverse events. Oxycodone and fentanyl were made available in the hospital for all in-patients, as necessary. Moreover, ketorolac was also made available for patients over the age of 6 months in the NSAID group. Outcomes were assessed up to 6 months post-injury. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two treatments for all outcomes measured and at all time-points.
