Effect of exercise interventions in the early phase to improve physical function after hip fracture - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Nine studies (699) including patients with hip fractures were included in this meta-analysis comparing exercise interventions and control in the early post-fracture phase. The primary outcome of interest was physical function which was assessed using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, walking speed, endurance, and the Berg Balance scale. Furthermore, overall physical function outcome pooling all outcomes was also assessed. Whilst pooled overall physical function was statistically significantly in favour of the exercise group (p<0.001), no statistically significant differences were observed between the two treatment arms in the pooled individual physical function measures (p>0.05 for all).
