Home-based Exergaming for Elderly Patients Recovering from Total Knee Replacement .
Effects of a home-based, exergaming intervention on physical function and pain after total knee replacement in older adults: a randomised controlled trial.
BMJ Open Sport Exerc Med. 2023 Mar 3;9(1): e001416.52 elderly knee osteoarthritis patients who underwent a unilateral primary total knee replacement were randomized to receive 4 months of exergaming rehabilitation (videogame-based rehabilitation; n=25) or standard home-based exercise (n=27). The primary outcomes of interest were knee-related function and pain, and mobility. Secondary outcomes of interest included knee pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), walking speed, lower extremity performance, muscle strength, knee range of motion, and satisfaction, assessed up to 4 months follow-up. The study revealed comparable results between the two groups for most outcomes; however, patients who received the exergaming program reported significantly better mobility improvement and a higher level of satisfaction compared to the standard group.
