Randomised trial of blood transfusion versus a restrictive transfusion policy after hip fracture surgery

200 patients who had undergone hip fracture surgery were randomized to either a restrictive or standard blood transfusion protocol. The purpose of this study was to compare the two protocols with respect to various clinical outcomes. After a final follow-up of 1 year, results indicated there were no significant differences between groups in the incidence of complications, mean haemoglobin levels at 6 weeks, mean change in mobility score, duration of stay in the orthopaedic ward, total hospital stay, the number of people discharged to their original residence, or mortality at any time point throughout the study.
