No difference in gait recovery after THA with different head diameters: a prospective randomized study
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2013 Dec;471(12):3830-7. doi: 10.1007/s11999-013-2926-6Sixty female patients with unilateral primary hip osteoarthritis undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive treatment using a prosthetic femoral head with a diameter of either (1) 28 mm, (2) 36 mm, or (3) between 42-48 mm). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the diameter of the femoral head used in THA affects gait recovery and hip function. After a follow-up of 4 months, results indicated that a prosthesis femoral head diameter of 28 mm, 36 mm or between 42-48 mm did not significantly influence spatiotemporal gait analysis parameters (i.e. gait velocity, stance phase duration, and stride length), kinematic and kinetic gait parameters, or hip function scores.
