Effectiveness of a bandage to prevent re-dislocation after total hip arthroplasty in patients with a previous hip dislocation. A randomized controlled trial with 12-week follow-up

Ninety-nine patients with at least 1 previous hip arthroplasty dislocation were randomized to receive standard care plus 12 weeks of hip bandaging to reduce hip range of motion (n=50) or standard care alone (n=49). The primary outcome of interest was the rate of redislocation after treatment. Secondary outcomes of interest included the Oxford Hip Score, Short Form 36 (SF-36) physical and mental component scores, and patient satisfaction. Intention-to-treat analysis results revealed no significant differences between the two groups in all outcomes. However, in the per-protocol analysis (patients who wore hip bandage for at least 8 hours per day), the hip bandage significantly reduced the rate of hip re-dislocation.
