Hemidiaphragmatic paralysis after costoclavicular approach versus other brachial plexus blocks in upper limb surgery: a meta-analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis included six randomized controlled trials involving 414 patients undergoing upper limb surgery, comparing the costoclavicular brachial plexus block (CCB) to other brachial plexus block (BPB) techniques. Pooled outcomes of interest included the incidence of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP), pulmonary function test results, and other adverse events. The results demonstrated a significantly lower incidence of HDP in the CCB group, with relative ratios showing a substantial reduction compared to other BPB techniques. The findings suggest that CCB may be a preferable alternative for reducing the risk of HDP without compromising the effectiveness of the anesthesia provided for upper limb surgeries.
