Tourniquet Vs No Tourniquet On Blood Loss In Total Knee Arthroplasty .
The effects of tourniquet use on blood loss and perioperative complications in total knee arthroplasty.
BMC Musculoskelet Disord . 2023 Oct 27;24(1):847.50 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a tourniquet (n=25) or no tourniquet (n=25). The primary outcomes of interest were hemoglobin levels, estimated blood loss, total blood loss, operative time, and serum D-dimer. Secondary outcomes included drainage volume, incidence of blood transfusion, volume of blood transfusion, and the incidence of adverse events. All outcomes were comparable between the two groups except for serum D-dimer levels after seven postoperative days which was significantly lower in the tourniquet group. Alternatively, the incidence of local complications was significantly higher in the tourniquet group.
