“Platelet-Rich Plasma” epidural injection an emerging strategy in lumbar disc herniation: a Randomized Controlled Trial

30 patients with single-level lumbar disc herniation were randomized to receive either platelet-rich plasma (PRP; n=15) or triamcinolone (n=15) epidural injections. The primary outcome of interest included leg pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The secondary outcomes of interest included VAS back pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the incidence of treatment failure, local inflammation, infection, neurological deficits, and persistent pain. Outcomes were assessed at 2, 6, 12, and 24 weeks post-operation. VAS leg pain scores showed a significant reduction from baseline after 6, 12, and 24 weeks. This reduction was considered clinically significant. Alternatively, there were no statistical or clinical differences in VAS back pain or ODI scores from baseline in either group at all time points. The incidence of treatment failure was similar between the two groups after 24 weeks.
