97 patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either a gap-balancing technique (GB; n=46) or a measured resection technique (MR; n=47). Outcomes of interest included operative time, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Knee Society Score (KSS), Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), range of motion in flexion and extension, mechanical axis, posterior condyle offset, and femoral component rotation. HSS patellar scores after 2 years, posterior condylar offset, and femoral component rotation were all significantly better in the GB group compared to the MR group.
