Effects of low dose ibogaine on subjective mood state and psychological performance

This study did not identify any stimulant effects after a single 20 mg doses of ibogaine. Some evidence pointed to the potentially modulating effect of active moiety concentrations on selective attention abilities, although future research is needed to substantiate this relationship. Future studies should also aim to include a placebo arm, a larger sample size, and ideally a range of ibogaine doses.

Twenty-one healthy participants were included in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the effect of ibogaine on psychological variables reflecting subjective mood state and a range of cognitive functions. Participants received a single 20mg Ibogaine dose following pretreatment with either paroxetine or placebo. Blood plasma concentrations and active moiety of ibogaine and noribogaine were analyzed using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry and psychological performance was measured using a computerized battery consisting of six mood scales and eight cognitive tests measuring basic visuomotor performance and inhibitory control. Results show that ibogaine had minimal influence on psychological tests and mood ratings.
