Dimensions of LSD, methylphenidate and chlordiazepoxide experiences

Methylphenidate induced therapeutic effects that were stronger than LSD. LSD induced effects of sensory and perceptual distortions as well as religious, mystical and paranormal sensations. Chlordiazepoxide did not produce any therapeutic effects but produced relaxation while the other two drugs induced anxiety. These results show that consciousness-changing drugs produce a variety of effects in an identical set and setting. The results are limited by the use of all males and the lack of a control group of healthy subjects.

Ninety-nine male alcoholic patients underwent a double-blind study to assess the effects of methylphenidate, and chlordiazepoxide in an identical set and setting. Effects were measured using the DWM Card Sort. LSD produced sensory and perceptual distortions and mystical, religious or paranormal sensations. LSD did not produce the traditional therapeutic experience. Both LSD and methylphenidate produced anxiety while chlordiazepoxide produced relaxation and enhanced music appreciation.
