The short-lived improvements observed in the LSD-treated group suggests that LSD as a primary treatment does not offer any advantage over dextroamphetamine. Despite many patients retaining their drinking habits, the degree of their impairment decreased. These results are limited by the attrition of participants, the use of all males and the lack of using a better control.

Seventy-two alcoholic patients underwent a blind, controlled study to compare the effects of a single large LSD dose with the effects of dextroamphetamine on treating alcoholism. Outcomes were measured using the Drinking Behaviour Scale (DBS). After a two-month follow-up, LSD-treat patients had improved DBS scores compared to the dextroamphetamine group. After 6 months however, the differences between the two groups disappeared.
