The Effect of a Hip-Strengthening Program on Mechanics During Running and During a Single-Leg Squat
Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy; 2011; 41: 625-63220 female participants with excessive hip adduction during running were randomized to either a training group (strength training) or a control group (no intervention but maintained current running distance). The results of 6 week follow-up indicated that the training group displayed significant increases in hip abductor and external rotation strength in comparison to control. However, it was also found that there were no significant changes in hip or knee mechanics during running in the training group. There were also significant changes in hip and knee mechanics during a single leg squat. Presumably, these changes in mechanics were due to the neuromuscular training that was specific to the single leg squat.
