2019 AAOS Annual Meeting: Opioid Use is Reduced in Patients Treated with NSAIDS After Arthroscopic Shoulder Instability Repair: A Randomized Study

40 patients scheduled for arthroscopic repair due to shoulder instability were randomized to a postoperative analgesia regimen which featured either ibuprofen 600mg plus 10 tablets of oxycodone hydrochloride 5/325mg for rescue analgesia, or to only oxycodone hydrochloride 5/325mg. Patients were assessed primarily for pain scores and number of oxycodone hydrochloride 5/325mg tablets consumed over the first postoperative week. Results demonstrated no significant differences between groups in pain scores at either 1, 4, or 7 days postoperatively, while number of oxycodone hydrochloride 5/325mg tablets consumed over the first postoperative week was significantly reduced in the ibuprofen 600mg group.
