COVID-19 Variants of Concern: Will There Be A Third Wave ?

Multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern—B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and P.1—have spread rapidly worldwide and demonstrate features that heighten global risk. Evidence suggests these variants are more transmissible, may increase disease severity, raise the likelihood of reinfection, and reduce the neutralizing activity of vaccine-elicited antibodies. Variants carrying the E484K mutation, notably B.1.351 and P.1, appear most concerning for potential vaccine escape. Although current data are limited and largely preprint, the cumulative evidence points to a realistic possibility of a third wave driven by VOCs, underscoring the need for immediate, strict, and sustained public health measures.
