Evaluation of the use of tranexamic acid in the postoperative period in patients with scoliosis undergoing posterior fusion.

Twenty-eight patients with scoliosis (21 idiopathic, 7 other etiologies) were randomized to receive tranexamic acid intraoperatively and postoperatively (n=14) or intraoperatively only (n=14). The primary outcome was postoperative blood loss measured through drain output. Secondary outcomes included transfusion requirements, length of hospital stay, and incidence of adverse effects. Outcomes were assessed during the immediate postoperative period. Overall, the study revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups in blood loss, transfusion requirements, or hospital stay duration. The findings suggest that the postoperative use of TXA does not significantly improve outcomes compared to intraoperative use alone.
