Effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group block with ultrasonography in patients diagnosed with hip fracture in the emergency department

Forty-two patients presenting to the emergency department with hip fractures were randomized to receive a pericapsular nerve group block (PENG; n=18) or intravenous paracetamol/tramadol (n=21) for pain control. The outcomes of interest included Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain scores at rest and with a 15 degree straight leg raise, measured up to 24 hours after emergency room processing. Patients in the PENG group reported significantly lower pain scores at rest and with 15 degree straight leg raise compared to the control group, and only 2/18 patients required additional analgesia.
