Effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group block with ultrasonography in patients diagnosed with hip fracture in the emergency department

The results of this study suggest that a pericapsular nerve group block can provide superior pain control with a quicker onset time compared to intravenous paracetamol/tramadol for patients presenting to emergency with hip fractures. This study was limited by the single-center design and small sample size, as well as the performance of the procedure by a single, highly experienced practitioner which may not be generalizable. More research is required to confirm the results of this study.

Forty-two patients presenting to the emergency department with hip fractures were randomized to receive a pericapsular nerve group block (PENG; n=18) or intravenous paracetamol/tramadol (n=21) for pain control. The outcomes of interest included Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) pain scores at rest and with a 15 degree straight leg raise, measured up to 24 hours after emergency room processing. Patients in the PENG group reported significantly lower pain scores at rest and with 15 degree straight leg raise compared to the control group, and only 2/18 patients required additional analgesia.
