Single versus double blade technique for skin incision and deep dissection in surgery for closed fracture: a prospective randomised control study

J Orthop Surg (Hong Kong). 2016 Apr;24(1):67-71.

184 patients scheduled to undergo surgical treatment for closed fractures were randomized to receive tissue dissection performed with either one surgical scalpel or two. The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of two surgical blades (one for superficial incision and the another for deep tissue dissection) would result in a significantly decreased incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) when compared to a single-blade technique, after a 30-day observational period. Results demonstrated comparable rates of surgical site infection between study groups, suggesting that the use of two surgical blades was not associated with a decreased risk of developing SSI at 30 days.
