Topical tranexamic acid in hip fractures: a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blinded study.
Can J Surg. 2021 Aug 10;64(4): E449-E456.Seventy four patients undergoing operative management for a hip fracture were randomized to receive intraoperative topical tranexamic acid (TXA) (n=31) or a placebo (n=34). Outcomes of interest were postoperative hemoglobin levels, transfusion rates and adverse events. The TXA group demonstrated significantly higher hemoglobin levels on postoperative days 1 and 2. When excluding intraoperative transfusions, no differences in postoperative transfusions were found between the two groups. No differences in adverse events were found between groups.
