TKR: No difference between all-polyethylene and metal-backed tibial implants .
Should we reconsider all-polyethylene tibial implants in total knee replacement?
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2006 Dec;88(12):1596-60251 patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis were randomized to receive total knee replacement (TKR) with either all-polyethylene or metal-backed tibial implants. Over 2 years, radiostereophotogrammetric analysis indicated that there was no difference between the two groups in the migration of prostheses. The two groups also did not differ in their SF-12, Oxford knee scores, alignment or range of motion. It was therefore concluded that there is no advantage of the metal-backed implants over all-polyethylene tibial implants in TKR.
