Do we need a gender-specific total knee replacement? A randomised controlled trial comparing a high-flex and a gender-specific posterior design
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2012 Jun;94(6):787-9224 female patients (48 knees) with bilateral osteoarthritis were randomized to receive a high-flexion posterior-stabilised (PS) total knee replacement (TKR) in one knee and a gender-specific high-flexion PS TKR in the other knee. Over 1 year, there was no significant difference between the two types of TKR with respect to range of movement, pain, satisfaction, and the median "feel" score. The two types also did not differ when assessed on various parameters of gait analysis. Although patients demonstrated significant improvement from both TKR designs, there appears to be no advantage of the gender specific design over the conventional high-flexion PS TKR.
