TKA: Sciatic nerve block equivalent to periarticular infiltration .
Combined femoral and sciatic nerve block vs combined femoral and periarticular infiltration in total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial

Epub 2012 Jul 5Fifty-two patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive either combined femoral and sciatic nerve blocks (FNB-SNB) or combined femoral nerve block with periarticular and intra-articular anesthetic infiltration (FNB-PI), in order to measure average morphine consumption 24 hours and 48 hours post-operatively. In the first 24 hours and 48 hours, there were no significant differences in morphine consumption between the groups. The Visual Analogue Scale scores, knee flexion and extension lag, anesthetic time, surgical time, and length of hospital stay were also similar.
