Can Arthroplasty Stem Influence Outcome: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Stem Length in Cemented Total Hip Arthroplasty.

A total of 220 patients with osteoarthritis were randomized to receive either a standard (150 mm) femoral stem (n=110) or a short (125 mm) femoral stem (n=110) in this double-blind randomized controlled trial. The primary outcome was hip-specific function measured by the Oxford Hip Score (OHS) at 1 year. Secondary outcomes included health-related quality of life, patient satisfaction, stem height and alignment, radiographic loosening, and complications. Outcomes were assessed at 1 and 2 years. As a result, there were no significant differences in hip-specific function, quality of life, patient satisfaction, or complications between the groups. However, the short stem group showed greater varus angulation and a higher likelihood of varus stem alignment.
